I. Thesis or purpose of your siteÑ What do want your audience to learn?

a. Statement of purpose, either explicit on the top page, or implicit but easy for user to determine,  see for example,  http://polyland.lib.calpoly.edu/overview/ThisProject/index.html

b. Everything on the site supports this purpose.

c.Items irrelevant to the thesis or purpose

d.Value and validity of this purpose

Score: 2

not done; main page should be Òindex.htmlÓ  all photos need to be credited on page they appear

the top hiking page and hiking tips pages are irrelevant; the third paragraph of Òour hikeÓ adds little

Interview should be linked to a page which introduces it, relates it to central topic and purpose and summarizes its content.

Score: 5

All these problems are solved.  Your top page statement is thoughtful and well written.

II. Integration with Cal Poly Land projectÕs  purposes and design format

Score: 3

Providing information about wildlife youÕve seen on poly land is appropriate, but it would help to provide maps and other information about time and date to make it possible for user to also find it.  Relating material on this site to Bird information in Field Guide would also help appropriate.  So would making or finding  recordings of birdsongs and including descriptions of their behavior and flying patterns.

Score: 5

Format is excellentÑeach page is attractively laid out and easy to navigate to and from.  Orientation toward Cal Poly is much enhanced.  All concerns here addressed

III. Extent and Navigation properties

a. Is there enough material to require 5 to 8 minutes for the user to navigate through the site and absorb what it has to offer.

b. Are there clear , consistent, logical and interesting ways to navigate through the site,  for example ÒExplore Cal Poly Land by place or theme or collection using the navigation  bar to the left of every page.  Each of the links there leads to further subdivisionsÓ

Score: 2

Right now the site is too small.  You should have sections on each of the birds you found, and if possible you should find more.  Again the field guide should be of assistance.

Its not easy to find ones way among the cells in the navigation table.  The table borders arent necessary.  The spatial relationships among cells donÕt show much about the relationships among topics.

Score: 5

All concerns addressed.  Excellent selection of material and of links.

IV. Quality of Material Presented

a. TextÑclarity, sufficiency, conciseness, elegance, accuracy, including documentation

b. Images or multimedia elements

c. Integrations of text and imagesÑtheir relevance and mutual illumination

Score 3

Images are attractive and provide helpful multiple views.  Information is worthwhile,  sources need to be documented.  Your observations and information about role in Polyland ecology could be strengthened.  And more birds should be presented.

Score: 4.8

Most concerns addressed.  Still no documentation of sources of factual information and of birdsong files.  Writing quality is improved but still needs proofreading for typos and wordiness or repetition.  Excellent variety of content and format of materials and fine use of multimedia elements.
